I bought this at a flea market on Saturday.
Now all I need is a pool.

Gab with me, why don't you?
Among the exciting things I do, my favorite job is C.E.O. of Lucitebox, an online vintage clothing boutique. Check out my storehere.I would love to add you to my growing list of fabulous customers! Today!
That is so cool! I need a pool too. I keep “threatening” to buy one. Maybe one day.
I’d LIKE the pool, but I NEED that figure. Maybe if I had a pool I’d get a figure? Or at least a waistline? Hmmm.
Holly – I have a fabric question – we have a vintage dress that my sister wants to get married in and it has a few sort of rust-colored water-spot-looking areas near the hem. If you recommend against messing with it we will leave it alone – she is so ravishing in it, who will look past her teeny waist and pool-girl above figure to see the hemline? – it is a metallic shot acetate, I think. It is lined with acetate I feel certain. I need to send you a picture of it when shse tries it on. You’ll Love IT!!! It is Mad Men extraordinaire.
Jennifer–acetate can be washed, but you would need to use cold water and hand wash it. You will NOT want to wash it if it’s some other type of fabric. What’s more, don’t use something like Oxyclean on it. Colors bleed. If you can test a part of the interior hem to see if it’s color safe, that’s a good idea. Also, another issue that could arise is that the dress will shrink and become shorter than the lining. (Not a good scenario.) You may need to leave it alone or find a really good drycleaner you can trust. I recently sent a dress to another state just to have it cleaned by someone who might do better. My formerly “trusted” cleaner ruined something of mine recently.
Lastly, once you have a photo of the dress and a close up of the fabric, take it to the discussion board @ vintage fashion guild. They might be able to advise you further. It sounds like a LOVELY dress!
Thank you, Holly. We will take your advice. I think we determined that an evening wedding precludes the close examination of the hemline in harsh daylight, so there you go – leave it alone in it’s current vintage condition. It is white with silver thread “dots” in a swirly floral-like pattern all over. I will send a pic. And honestly, she does have the figure pictured above. Lucky.
I am glad to know that acetate is washable – I have made a few costumes with acetate satin and they got… fragrant… and the bodice piece could use a date with some cold water.
I’ve never had a problem washing acetate with a mild soap. I usually just hang it to dry and try to smooth out as many wrinkles as I can. Then steam it. Do post on the VFG board. There are many helpful people with much experience with cleaning vintage.
Love it! You should see mine. Can I post a pic? I don’t have a pool either but framed my sign and hung it in the bathroom.
Trixie–Hi! Long time no see…I’d love to see your pool sign. I think you should be able to post a pic. If there’s a problem doing it in the comments, I’ll try to edit it to make it show up. Or something.
