Liz in 90s color block jacket and skirt

You’re tired of my posts about the fashion show, I’m sure. Nonetheless, I wanted to show these things to you because I think they illustrate something about my aesthetic and the way that I select things for my website. One of the things I try to keep in mind when buying vintage to offer on Lucite Box is how something is going to look when it’s on Sabrina, my mannequin.

I curate my site so that the things I put on it not only  photograph well, but they’re things that I think a real person will look good wearing. If I am on the fence about something, I’ll often run through a few questions to help me select what to buy since I can’t buy everything nor do I want to own it all. For instance: Who will wear this?  Where she might wear it?  How can she make it her own? Can this be easily styled into something that looks right for right now?

Ash in vintage 50s dress and cardigan

I threw together these comparative images so that you could see where I’m going with what I call “the Lucite Box look.” Although that’s a slightly obtuse way to describe the kind of work I do, my aim is always to have that “look.”  It’s specific and I tend to shop for my inventory with an overarching sensibility that guides me. That “look” is often cute, whimsical, bold, and seemingly easy for a woman to pull off without looking costume-y or forced.

Dottie in 60s tweed cape suit

This suit that Dottie wears, in particular, is something that I really loved when I first saw it, but I almost didn’t buy it because I knew it wasn’t really going to look good on static Sabrina. See how delightfully different it looks when worn and in motion?

Kim in 50s striped dress

It feels pretty cool to know that I generally achieved my goals in getting “the look.”  I think it’s sweet to see Liz, Ash, Dottie and Kim in these pics and compare how they look in the clothes versus how the clothes look on Sabrina.  What a difference a personality makes! I hope you enjoy how these old clothes seem to easily come to life on real women.  I know I do.

When I have shots from the show itself you can bet I’ll share them with you.

These portraits were taken by Martha who had another commitment on the night of the fashion show. When she showed up late she was wearing this dress and she looked awesome. The dress fits as if it was made for her.
