I quit smoking, and in doing so, I came to realize I’m allergic to things. I now have seasonal allergies and I get extremely congested after drinking more than one hoppy beer. This is sad. I love IPAs. I guess all that tar and garbage in the cigs was masking any sensitivity I may have had to various allergens.

This pink feathery gown from 1965 by Balenciaga makes me sneeze just looking at it. Oh, but I do love feather trimmings. There’s an inner Zsa Zsa Gabor trapped inside me and she’s wearing maribou, for sure.

So this makes me wonder about Mad Men. I’m waiting to see more feathers, rhinestones and beads on the women. It seems to me that the ’60s were replete with all kinds of snazzy sparkling things. We don’t get many opportunities to  see the characters in glitzy evening wear and I really hope that changes.

One of my friends just purchased a small stash of vintage beaded sleeveless shell sweaters in great colors. (You know the ones–they’re usually from Hong Kong and have lots of beady baubles on them just ripe for some serious shimmy situations.)  My friend predicts that someone on Mad Men is going to wear one of those tops and all of us are going to want one of them.  Even though I don’t have those beaded sweaters, I have this sequined sweater on my site. No one seems to get it, but believe me, my inner Zsa Zsa understands. Yeah, the price is pretty high, but this sequined sweater is so outrageous and great I just might have to take it on a test drive this Spring. What to wear on the bottom, though?  WWZZD? (What would Zsa Zsa do?)

Oh, one more thing… how about Jane’s acid trip, rhinestone festooned pallazo pants jumpsuit?  What’d you think?

The last two episodes of this season’s Mad Men were both fantastic. That’s all I’m going to say because I have to go get my hanky. I’m sneezy today.

Here’s a snapshot of my friend Cookie wearing a dress she got from me. She’s at Viva Las Vegas, an annual trip for Cookie.  I never put this 1950s dress on the site because it didn’t really look good on Sabrina. It looks darling on Cookie and I love seeing her in her Easter bonnet. (She wears hats about 90% of the time. This one is almost tame compared to many of the toques I’ve seen her wearing.)

I lost some weight. I noticed it when none of my clothes fit. Fortunately, my kilt still fits and won’t need any altering.  I am wearing that tour jacket I do so love. This photo was taken at the meeting spot for Critical Lass, a monthly ladies bike ride I’ve been going on since its inception last May.

I live near the Tastee Freeze. If you saw me there this past weekend, of course, I was wearing that jacket. I was also wearing a super cute cotton frock I just bought that morning after a 15 mile ride. I got it at a vintage open house sale held by the the lovely Lisa from Archives Vintage.  Thanks, Lisa! I love this dress.

You probably watch Mad Men.  If you do, you were enthralled last week by Megan’s birthday present for Don Draper. (If you don’t watch it, whatevs, loser.)

Here’s something awesome. You might remember my online gal pal, Sue.  She has been a terrific pen pal. Take a looksee at Sue’s many contributions to Hollygab right here and over here, over there, and even yonder. Well, the other day, Sue sent me photos of her model wearing the very same dress that Megan Draper is wearing while doing her  Zou Bisou Bisou hoochie-cootchie-coo dance for Don.

Sue says that she’s not selling this dress until she can wear it for girl’s night out cocktails. Wherever she’s going that night, you better believe that I’ll be waiting for her in the ladies room. There’ll be no rumble.  I’m sneaky. I’m just going to quietly hide behind the door and use that stealth little move I know called “grandma’s little helper.” That ought to get me the dress.  You see, when Sue walks into the comfort station wearing her Megan dress, I’ll be there. Behind the bathroom door with my pretty little hanky. The one that’s dipped in ether. I can only hope that I’m able break Sue’s fall before she hits the floor. I wouldn’t want her to damage those amazing sheer chiffon sleeves.

It’s Hot Pants Friday, isn’t it? Who cares! All I want to do is day dream about wearing this dress.

Thanks for the photos Sue. Don’t worry. I’m pretty sure you’re safe from my twisted fantasy. I don’t know where to buy ether.

OH! OH! OH! And! Here’s that red Hawaiian dress that I mentioned yesterday.  It now resides with Karyn who clearly knows a thing or two about looking like a million dollars in a vintage dress. Love it.

You see? This is how you wear vintage. Mix it up. Make it yours. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and colors. Let’s hear it for Karyn’s awesome accessorizing!

P.S. When I expressed to K. that it may still be a little too chilly outside to wear a strapless dress, she said, “Oh, I don’t care. I’m going to wear this dress ALL the time. I’ll just throw my leather jacket over it.” Huzzah!  This is what personal style is all about.

At left:  Niki of Bombshell Shocked wears a pretty Spring floral ’50s shirt dress with big pockets. This dress never made it to my website, but Niki was able to get it at my open house sale.  I love how Niki styled it with a black leather belt and a minty green sweater which compliments her cute white bobbie socks and mary janes.  I witnessed Niki receive many compliments on her outfit on the afternoon she wore it and you know why? Because she looked MIGHTY CUTE!  Oh, and also, her bicycle is a 1940′s bike that’s not in the least bit restored. It’s beautiful in all of its rusty, clanky glory. Niki rides that thing everywhere. She’s an awesome vintage dealer and a super fun new friend.

At right: I’m wearing a vintage Viet Nam tour jacket from my store.  I yanked this from my website because nobody wanted to buy it.  This is the third tour jacket that’s found its way into my closet. It didn’t fit me when I got it, but it seems to fit fairly well now. I bought it for resale at least ten years ago. It wasn’t something easily found while browsing for vintage. The back of the jacket had been completely covered by a large patch. It seems as if someone was using the jacket as part of a costume because the big patch covering the map of Viet Nam was some kind of fake ’50s/’80s girl gang “logo” that was not well designed and featured terrible graphics. The patch was ironed on with Stitch Witchery. It was with great effort that I  removed the patch and all of the gunky glue-y residue left behind. (Total pain in the ass project, but I just knew there was something behind that worth investigating.)

At right: Karyn of Dethrose Vintage wears a darling vintage 40s dress she bought from me at my most recent open house sale. It suits her so well. Karyn is a porcelain blonde with gorgeous hair highlighted with pink streaks. You can see more of Karyn’s style here. (Delight in it.) Karyn also bought this dress which is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous things that’s ever been worn by a human standing in my living room. I believe one of Karyn’s friends said something to the effect of: “See. Now why would someone go to Anthropologie for a dress like this when this vintage dress is so superior? It’s made better and it would probably be priced higher at that store anyway.” It’s true. The red cotton is sturdy. The fit is amazeballs. The metallic print is truly outstanding. You won’t see a contemporary textile like this at the mall. Ever. I hope to show you Karyn wearing it this summer. (Hint, hint @ Karyn.)

At left: Merl wears a stunning maxi dress from the ’70s that suits her perfectly. When she walked into the living room wearing it, we were all smitten. This dress was meant to be worn by this woman! Because Merl liked the dress so much and it fit so well, she was positively radiant in it.  The strong colors and the bold print compliment this ginger woman. She plans to pin up the dress on one side to show some leg. She’ll probably pair it with a brightly colored pair of tights. Surely, she will wear this with some great jewelry. (You can look at her handmade jewelry here, by the way.)  I look forward to seeing how Merl wears this in real life. Pulling up one side of the dress is a really nice plan since the bodice of the dress is fairly understated and modest. Good pick, Merl.

Darling ones, it seems I’ve been showing a fair amount of vintage worn by regular people.  Now–ahem. What about you? Have you purchased vintage clothing from me in the past? This weekend, International House of Hot Pants is preparing a giant kettle of hot pants chili and chasing down that chili with a hot pants cocktail. This culinary adventure is either the platonic ideal of food and drink or a a sure-fired way to end up with gastronomically gassy hot pants. We’ll let you know how it goes.
